MUSIC REVIEW "HAPPY"
Pharrell Williams is a singer-songwriter who was born on the fifth of April in 1973 in Virginia Beach. He originally wrote this song for CeeLo Green. However Green did not sing the song because his record label (Elektra Records) decided not to publish this song because he planned to release a Christmas song, so Pharrell sang this song himself and it became a world-famous song.
The genre of this song is a mix between soul and R&B, and recorded in 2013 at the Circle House Studios in Miami.
The audience really liked this song because it broke many records, such as the song that was the longest in the top 40.
When I first heard this song it sounded really nice to me, especially the chorus because it actually makes me happy, because of the way he sings it with the choir in the background and the clapping of hands. I really like the fast tempo in this song too, it makes the meaning, to be happy, more powerful, because when the tempo would be slow the song would be sadder it think.
The first five words that come to my mind when I listen to this song are: clapping, choir, fast tempo, high pitch and happy.
When I listened to this song for the second time I really heard the choir clearly at the background, and this creates like a smooth background sound that makes the song even nicer to listen. The instruments used in the song are nice too, because the high pitch of the drum really fits this song, I could also hear the bass clearly, especially in the chorus. However the instrument I like the most is something you cannot really see as an instrument, the clapping of hands. I really like that because it again makes the song even nicer to listen to.
The high pitch is also nice to listen to in the chorus, especially when he and the chorus sing the word “happy”, it is sung at a slightly higher pitch than the rest of the song. Which makes it stand out over the rest of the song.
And lastly the fast tempo, the fast tempo combined with all the other aspects I have just mentioned make this the perfect song, because it never really turns slow or sad, which I personally really like.
Pharrell William’s style of singing and writing songs is very different from many other singers I think.
I think this because he combines two genres (soul and R&B) really well, so he creates like his own unique style, and that is what I really like.
Furthermore the song does have a lot of repetition, mainly in the chorus where the word “happy” comes back every time. What’s more, the distinction between introduction, chorus and verse is very clear, the chorus is really clear because it simply repeats the whole time. And lastly Pharrell Williams did really well to try and grab my attention by immediately the nice beat of the song, and the way he sings.
When I hear this sing this song I really get happy, because the beat is fast, the pitch is slightly high and then he starts to sing the song. This really makes me happy when I am sad or angry, so when I feel like that I turn on this song. It sometimes even inspires me to go back to what I am doing even when it is not going the right way. However this song did not really change the way how I listened to it after my first impressions
This song is one of the ten songs which are in Pharrell’s album G.I.R.L. which was released on the third of March in 2014. “Happy” is the most popular song of them all, firstly because it just is a fantastic song and secondly it is the theme song of the film “despicable me 2”. It was so popular that it was on the first place in many national weekly charts. In the Netherlands its peak position was the first place in both the top 40 and the top 100. Worldwide, more than ten million copies were sold which made it one of the most best-selling singles worldwide.
So overall this song still is my favourite after all the things I looked at, such as the repetition which I think is the best part about this song and the mix between soul and R&B is really nice because it creates like a new sort of music which I really like. And lastly I think he is the only person who can sing this song in such a way that it is really good.
