IDENTITY SLIDES
MICHAEL RAY CHARLES
How does the artwork represent different aspects of the artists’ identity?
I think that the artist, Michael Ray Charles, is an Afro-American person and gives his opinion on racism and the past of the slavery of the black persons. And he tries to make the black (Afro-American) people as important as the white people. Because when he made these paintings, the difference between black and white people was huge.
He doesn’t show his real identity in public. However you can say that he is proud of his background, although some “black’’ people don’t like his ideas and paintings. His paintings show racial stereotypes from the American history. The paintings he makes are realistic, because this is what actually happens, racism.
How do those elements change the way you read the image or object?
At first sight I laughed about the first picture (Tommy Hilnigguh), because it actually is a really funny picture. However when I read about his background and the meaning behind his paintings, I thought again about these paintings and realised he tried to make clear that everybody is the same. No matter who you are or whatever your background is. And the way he paints really shows that he is proud of his background and that he is an Afro-American person.

BANKSY
How does the artwork represent different aspects of
the artists’ identity?
I think Banksy is a British person, who loves his country because he writes ‘please don’t laugh at our accent’, he knows that people laugh at his accent without them knowing that they’re laughing at it. I think he also likes to paint with only black graffiti, because many of his paintings are made with black graffiti on a white wall. This may be because he likes the colour black, it makes him feel better when he paints or his childhood wasn’t very good. And the paintings he makes aren’t very realistic because you will never see things like a person during a riot throwing a flower bouquet. However when I searched his name on the internet, his real identity is unclear and he tries to keep it like this.
How do those elements change the way you read the image or object?
Because almost all of his paintings are made with black graffiti on a white wall, it creates a very nice piece of art which impresses me by the way it is painted. And now I know much more about him and his style, I look through a very different perspective to his pieces of art. And now I know his childhood wasn’t probably as good as mine, I realise the meaning behind his paintings.

BRUCE NAUMAN
How does the artwork represent
different aspects of the partists’ identity?
On first sight, I think this artist is a really happy man because of the bright colours in the artwork. However when you look close, some words aren’t nice at all like die and fail, and two lines are written in black, so I think this means something like, there will always be something that doesn’t go as planned when everything goes right. And in this painting you can see that the last verbs of the lines are, ‘live and die’. Also the first verb of two lines are the same. And the last four lines say ‘black’, ‘white’, ‘red’ and ‘yellow’ in these colours, which aren’t verbs. He is from the United States and he expresses his art in forms like sex, death and pain.
How do those elements change the way you read the image or object?
When I read about that he expresses his art in forms like sex, death and pain I started to understand this piece of art, because as you can see almost all these verbs have got something to do with what he is trying to express in his artworks. So on this way I understood his work more. Also the way he made this piece of art was first weird to me, because why would you make something with neon lights, he did this to answer the question of what the role and position an artist has in the society.
